Although the city was severely damaged during World War II, you can still visit many historical buildings in Aachen. The city is mainly renowned for the magnificent Cathedral listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the famous spas, such as the Elisa Fountain and the Carolus Thermen.

Aachen is located in the west of Germany, near the border with both the Netherlands and Belgium and the place where Holland, Belgium and Germany meet near Vaals. Hills lie north and west of the city; extensive forests start in the south.
Textile industry and the production of needles used to be important pillars of Aachen's economy. Those industries have completely disappeared. Nowadays it's all about engineering and the production of tires, light bulbs and candy in Aachen. There are also some research and development centers of high-tech companies, often spin-offs from Aachen's reputable technical university. Tourism also plays an important role.
The nearest airport is located in the Netherlands: Maastricht Aachen Airport, about 30 kilometers west of the city. From Aachen the airport is easily reachable by rental car via freeway A76 in the direction of Antwerp and taking the direction of Maastricht (A2/E25) at Kerensheide junction.
Aachen has an extensive network of city busses, almost all running via the main bus station. Night busses also run on Saturday and Sunday nights and on holidays. In addition two high-speed trains stop in Aachen: the Thalys which runs between Cologne and Paris and the ICE line between Brussels and Frankfurt.
It's difficult to find a free parking place for your rental car in the street, but fortunately there are several parking garages in and around Aachen's city center. There are also four P&R areas on the outskirts of the city, where you can park your car and continue your journey to Aachen's center by bus.
Aachen has a large choice of accommodations ranging from a five-star hotel and several four-star hotels to basic guesthouses. Bear in mind though that many conferences are held in Aachen. During larger conferences it may be difficult to find a hotel room of your choice.
