Klagenfurt is the capital Austria's province Carinthia. With the foundation of the city - according to the legend - a vicious tapeworm first had to be overcome. The fountain in the center is a reminder of that (the Lindwurmbrunnen). The old city center is fully restored (Klagenfurt won different prizes for the preservation of its cultural heritage). The city has a good bus network, with which you can reach all interesting places in the city. Klagenfurt is not a big city and all the important attractions can easily be seen by foot. Furthermore, Klagenfurt has excellent train connections with other cities in Austria, and to Italy, Slovenia and Germany.
In and around the center of Klagenfurt there are many parking garages and spaces. These are clearly indicated. If you want to park your rental car for free, there are P+R sites on the east and west sides of the city. You can be taken to the center with a shuttle bus. The center of the city can be very busy, especially in the summer months. You should avoid driving during rush hour.
Klagenfurt has a wide variety of hotels and guest houses. One of the best options is AllYouNeed Hotel, which incidentally is only open during the summer months (July 1 to September 30). Klagenfurt is a popular destination and in the summer months it is suggested to book your hotel room in advance. There is a youth hostel at the university.
