George is one of the oldest cities of South Africa with beautiful, old British architecture. In addition the city is situated in a very green region, thanks to the rain which falls mainly in winter months.
The city has over 200,000 inhabitants.
George is located in the Western Cape Province, about halfway Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. The city lies in the heart of the so-called Garden Route, on a plateau between Outeniqua Maintain north of George, and the Indian Ocean south of town.
Woodworking has always been an important economic activity in George. The city still counts numerous furniture factories and wood is also exported. Tourism is another important pillar of the economy. The city lies in the heart of the touristic Garden Route. The city also holds many meetings and conferences.
George Airport is situated seven kilometers southwest of the city center. There are only domestic flights, to for example Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. The airport is easily reachable by rental car. From George you follow the R102 or the highway N2. The exit to the airport is clearly signposted.
There's no formal form of public transport in George, although there are plans for the introduction of city busses. Until this happens, taxis are the only form of public transport in George.
A rental car is an ideal means of transportation to discover George and surroundings, and the Garden Route. You will have no problems finding your way around, because the roads are clearly signposted. Finding a parking space in George is also easy.
George presents itself as the heart of the South African Garden Route and as a meeting and conference center. The supply of accommodation in the city is therefore good. We do recommend booking your hotel room well in advance, as George is becoming increasingly popular as tourist destination and location for large meetings.
