Car Rental Münster

Introduction

Münster originated around a monastery which was founded here at the end of the eighth century. Already ten years after the establishment of the monastery, Münster became a diocese and it was granted privileges in 1170. Münster is still mainly known for its many churches, with St. Paul's Cathedral standing out most. In the City Museum you can see how Münster has developed since the construction of the monastery.

Population

Approximately 275,000 people live in Münster, including a large number of students.

Location

Münster is located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in the west of Germany on the river Aa, which discharges into the Ems 15 kilometers north of the city. The city lies on a ridge, the so-called Münsterländer Kiessandzug. Münster's highest point is at 97 meters above sea level; the lowest point being at 44 meters.

Economy

The city is known as the creative brain of Westphalia. There are plenty of media, advertising agencies and graphical designers in Münster. There are also banks and insurance companies and the university (with almost 50,000 students) also provides employment.

Airports

Münster/Osnabrück International Airport is situated 25 kilometers north of the city center. It's easily reachable by rental car. From Münster's center you take the Steinfurter Strasse to the freeway A1 which leads to the airport. The exit to the airport (Hüttruper Heide) is clearly signposted.

Public Transport

Münster has an extensive bus network. The central bus station lies opposite the train station. Here buses leave in all directions (the bus network is star-shaped). From 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. (from Fridays to Saturdays even until 8 a.m.) the so-called Nachtnetz (night buses) becomes operational.

Traffic and Parking

The city council wants to limit car traffic in the center where possible and make way for cyclists and pedestrians. There are several parking lots and garages around the center where you can park your rental car. An electronic system indicates the nearest parking facility with availability. Like in many other German cities, Münster's center is a so-called Umweltzone, where only cars with a special sticker are allowed to drive. Rental cars tend to have one.

Hotels

Münster is a popular city-trip destination and therefore has a good choice of accommodations in all price ranges. Most hotels can be found near the train station (Hauptbahnhof). In the southwest of the city, the river Aa broadens to a lake. Here you'll also find accommodations, including an option for budget travelers, the youth hostel Jugendgästehaus am Aasee.
