Location information for Bremen

Introduction

Bremen constitutes, together with Bremerhaven on the coast, the smallest state of Germany: the Freie Hansestadt Bremen. It's a cozy town with interesting sights, including the Rathaus (on the UNESCO World Heritage sight), the Dom St. Petri and the Böttcherstrasse, where many galleries and specialty shops are located in the Jugendstil houses. Throughout the city you come across the statues of the Bremen Town Musicians (a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster) from the tale of the Brothers Grimm.

Population

Bremen has over 550,000 inhabitants.

Location

Bremen lies in north of Germany, along the Weser river. Just north of the city the river widens, where ships could reach the harbor. That is no longer the case, since the commercial shipping now lies more to Bremerhaven, which is 60 kilometers further north.

Economy

One of the largest employers in Bremen is Mercedes Benz, which produces Mercedes Benz C-classes in the city. Furthermore, parts of the aerospace (EADs) and aviation (Airbus) are made in Bremen. Traditionally, Bremen is an important port and therefore many trading houses and businesses in the food industry have their European or German headquarters. So it is the home of Beck's beer. The port still plays a major role. Did you know that of all the coffee that is drunk in Germany, half enters via Bremerhaven?

Airports

The airport of Bremen lies in the south of the city. With a rental car you are about 10 minutes from the airport in the center of Bremen. Also via the highway A1 to the south of the city, you can reach the airport comfortably (exit Arsten). The route to the airport is clearly indicated.

Public transportation

Bremen has excellent public transportation, consisting of trams and buses. Even at night some lines run, although less frequent (once an hour). You can purchase a day or week ticket. More to your advantage is the ErlebnisCARD Bremen, with which you can not only travel for free with public transportation, but also receive discount on attractions and in some restaurants.

Traffic and parking

The center of Bremen is easily reachable by rental car and there are also enough parking garages and sites in and around the city heart. Keep in mind that the center of the city is a so-called "environmental zone," where you need a special sticker to drive around. Rental cars mostly have such a sticker, but check this before you accept the car.

Furthermore, Bremen is well connected to other parts of Germany via the highway A1 (Hamburg/Osnabrück), A27 (Bremerhaven/Hannover) and A28 (Oldenburg).

Hotels

Bremen has a good supply of accommodation. From simple boarding houses to a Hilton Hotel. There are also many individuals who rent out a room, and at the Stadtwaldsee there is a camping site. Around the train station you will find a cluster of hotels.
