Location information for Lille

Lille (called Rijsel in Flemish) is the capital city of the region Nord-Pas-de-Calais. The city is often overlooked by tourists, but unfairly so. Lille has an attractive historical center with the Place du Général-de-Gaulle, often called Grand'place for short, as its center point. In the former exhibition hall, between the square and Place du Théâtre, is a large market where mostly flowers and books are sold. The Musée des Beaux-Arts houses works of Flemish, Dutch and French painters.

Lille has almost 230,000 inhabitants, but it is part of a metropolitan area where more than 1 million people live. It is the fourth largest urban agglomeration in France (after ParisLyon and Marseille).

Lille is situated in the far north of France, on the border of Belgium. The city lies on the Deule river, a tributary of the Leie. Together with the Belgian Kortrijk (25 kilometers north of Lille), the city constitutes to a European Economic Region.

Lille was formerly an important center of the textile industry. Today tourism plays an important role. The city was in the spotlight in 2004, when Lille and Genua was the 'Cultural Capital of Europe'. Furthermore, Lille is an administrative, financial and educative center. More than half of the population works in the service sector.

The international airport of Lille is located in Lesquin, 7 kilometers south of the city. The airport is easily accessible by rental car: it lies between the highway A1 (exit 20b) and A23 (exit 1).

Public transportation

Lille has excellent public transportation. There is a metro net consisting of two lines and also a bus network. Furthermore, there are two tram lines, to Roubaix and Tourcoign.

Traffic and parking

A part of the city center is only accessible to pedestrians. Lille is also a very busy city. The connections with the surroundings are excellent though. No less than five highways connect to the bypass of Lille: A1 (to Paris), A25 (Duikerken), A22 (Bruges), A27 (Brussels) and A23 (Valenciennes). You can best park your rental car in one of the covered car parks in and around the center of Lille.

There is a wide range of accommodation in Lille. Around the train station you will find many middle class hotels, whilst the more expensive hotels are mostly found on the Rue de Paris. There are also options for budget travelers, like the HI Hostel.
