Beauvais is a charming old town in the north of France with a turbulent history. The town was often a plaything in wars between the English and the French. In front of the city hall there is a statue of Jeanne Hachette, the local heroine who personally defeated the army of the Burgundian duke Karel de Stout in 1472. The impressive Cathedral of Saint-Etienne forms the heart of the city and furthermore there are many interesting museums.
The city itself has almost 60,000 inhabitants; the entire urban area has 100,000 inhabitants.
Since 1664 Beauvais has been known for its production of tapestry. Besides that, wool and cotton products are made. Furthermore the city is the center of the grain trade and there is some chemical and machine industry.
The small airport Beauvais Tillé Airport (4 kilometers north-east of the city) is mainly used by budget airlines as an alternative to the airports of Paris.
Beauvais has a good bus line network, however, do take into account that some buses do not run at night. The public transport is free for people under the age of 18 and above the age of 60.
The traffic in Beauvais is not very busy, you can easily drive around in your rental car to see places of interest in and around the city.
There are several parking places and garages where you can park your car for free, besides that there are some parking facilities where you have to pay, including the Cathedral and the Maréchal Foch.
You can also park in the street, but be aware of parking zone colors, red is the most expensive, orange forms the category in between and green zones are the most economic.
Beauvais has reasonably good hotels to offer, but there is no four or five-star accommodation. Besides the city center hotels there are some along the national road (Route Nationale 1) that leads to the airport.
