Already in the 11th century Tampere was an important trading post, but the city continued to grow, especially with the arrival of the textile industry in the late 18th century. The city's surroundings are beautiful: lakes and forests that invite you to undertake all kinds of activities, such as long hikes, swimming, fishing or sailing. The city itself has a beautiful cathedral, but one of the biggest attractions is the Särkänniemi amusement park, which has a dolphinarium. Furthermore, there are many museums about Tampere's history as a workers' town; there even is a Lenin Museum.

The metal and textile industries have largely disappeared from Tampere. In its place came the electrical and information communications technology. Furthermore, there is paper industry. Also, Tampere is an important educational center, for example it has general and technical universities.
