The airport of the capital of Costa Rica is located 17 kilometres to the north-west of San José, near the town of Alajuela. Officially, the airport is called Juan Santamaría, after a soldier who was killed in the war against the Americans in 1856. The airport has recently been privatised. The new owner has begun expanding and renovating the airport.
There is not train connection to the airport, but it is easy to reach by car and bus.
There are no hotels at the airport, but between the airport and San José there are a number of hotels. There are a limited number of shops, primarily souvenir shops. There are three fast-food restaurants, whose prices are pretty high. There are no business facilities, but there will be a business lounge after the renovation has been completed. In addition, the airport has three ATM's and an exchange office, which only exchanges small amounts at an unfavourable rate. The terminal building is reasonably accessible to disabled people.
In the aviation industry San Jose Airport is indicated with the abbreviations SJO (IATA airport code) and MROC (ICAO airport code).
