Helsingborg is a port town in Sweden with an attractive, historical center. One of the attractions is the tower of the medieval fortress Kärnan. The city also has an extensive range of shops; Helsingborg was the first Swedish city making the central shopping area solely accessible for pedestrians.
The city has almost 100,000 inhabitants.
Helsingborg is located in the south of Sweden, on the narrowest part of the Sont, the strait separating the country from Denmark. On the other side of this narrow strait lies the Danish Helsingør. Malmö lies over 60 kilometers southeast of the city.
The city's location has attracted many transportation companies and distribution centers. Transportation therefore forms the backbone of the economy. The port also plays an important role; passengers and goods are transported daily from Helsingborg's port to Denmark and vice versa. Home furnishing store IKEA is headquartered in Helsingborg and the nicotine chewing gum Nicorette is produced here.
The airport Ängelholm-Helsingborg Airport is situated about 35 kilometers northeast of the city center. It can be reached in half an hour by rental car. From the city center you first take the Ängelholmsvägen and then the freeway E20/E6 to the airport. The way to the airport is clearly signposted.
The ferry terminal Helsingborg C is also called Knetpunkten ('junction'), as it literally is the junction of all public transport in Helsingborg. Here ferries, trains and the local and regional buses come together. Helsingborg has good public bus transport. Destinations in the Skåne region can be reached with bus company Skånetrafiken.
Like many other Swedish cities, Helsingborg wants to reduce car traffic in the center and stimulate the use of public transport and bicycles. You can park your rental car in parking garages around the city center. The P+R areas on the verge of the city near the terminus of public transport lines are cheaper.
Helsingborg has a reasonable choice of accommodations, but you'll search in vain for a luxury hotel in the city. The number of midrange hotels and budget accommodations, however, is excellent. There are also some campsites in the vicinity of Helsingborg.
