Until recently, this airport had a very short runway, which made it a difficult place for pilots to land. With the support of the European Union, the runway was extended in 2000. The airport processes over 2 million passengers a year. It can only be reached by car and bus. There is an hourly bus service to Funchal, Machico and Caniço.
To the west of the city of Funchal, in the so-called hotel area, are the nearest hotels. The airport has a modest number of bars, restaurants and shops. On the top floor there is a restaurant that offers a great view of the airplanes. The airport has two VIP Lounges. In addition, it offers personal assistance to and from the airport.
