Pescara is the capital city of the province that holds the same name and is situated in the Italian Abruzzo region. It is a modern seaside resort surrounded by beautiful sand beaches along the Adriatic coast. Furthermore, there are several national parks in the near surroundings.
The city has 125,000 inhabitants.
Pescara is located in central Italy along the eastern Adriatic coast. The city is situated at the mouth of the Pescara River, which has its origin in the Apennines, where the river is called the Aterno. There are wide sand beaches, both on the north and the south of the Pescara estuary.
The local economy mainly depends on tourism during the summer. Furthermore there is industrial activity, mainly in the valley of the Pescara river where cheap electricity is provided by hydro-electric power stations. In the region between Pescara and Chieti there is textile and chemical industry. Other important sectors are the food industry and the production of building materials. The local agriculture is mainly dedicated to the cultivation of vegetables, of which the majority goes to the markets in Rome.
The airport of Pescara, Abruzzo International Airport, is located only 4 kilometers westwards from the city center, just on the outside of the beltway that surrounds the city.
Pescara has a good public transport network, nonetheless, do not be surprised if a bus ride gets cancelled due to an unknown reason. There are also bus connections to other towns and villages in the region and there is a frequent bus service to Rome (beautiful ride through the Apennines). Pescara also has good train connections with the rest of Italy. Pescara Centrale is the main train station, the other two train stations are Pescara Porta Nuova and Pescara San Marco.
Driving around in Pescara is no problem. You can either park your car on the street (paid parking in the city center), in one of the parking garages or at the big parking lot at the port. There are excellent highway connections with the rest of Italy. The A14 coastal road (Bologna -Taranto) runs with a wide curve around Pescara, this road is connected to the A25, which runs through the Apennines and later continues as the A24 to Rome.
Being a reputable seaside resort there is no lack of hotels and resorts. Hotel Esplanade is the most stylish hotel of all, completely renovated it exudes the glory of the early 20th century. Some hotels along the coast have a private beach.
Even though there is a large variety of accommodation, we still advise you to book well in advance during summer months.
