“Excellent; booked a Fiat 500 and got it.”

“"We were delayed and the employee waited for us well beyond closing time; this was very much appreciated! The tire chains weren't the best. Other than that the car was fine and the service good."”

Introduction

Ancona is the capital of the Italian region of Marche and an important seaport. Although the old center has been damaged severely during WWII, there are still many interesting buildings in Ancona, which are worth a visit. First of all, there is the imposing cathedral on top of the Colle Guasco. Near the harbor is the Arch of Trajan, which is the entry to a footpath on the harbor wall. Near Ancona you will find beautiful beaches and holiday resorts. The public beaches (spiaggia libera) usually aren't very clean; therefore, it's recommended to visit a beach for which you pay an entrance fee. Furthermore, from Ancona you can make nice trips with a rental car. For example driving on the old Roman Via Flaminia through the hills and mountains or visiting the Verdicchio wine district.

Population

The city has more than 100,000 inhabitants.

Location

Ancona is located on Italy´s east coast on the Adriatic Sea. The city is situated on the slopes of the Colle Astagno and Colle Guasco, belonging to the promontory of the Monte Conero. The seaside town of Rimini is nearly one hundred kilometers northwest of Ancona.

Economy

The seaport is the local economy´s engine. It is a starting point for many Adriatic Sea ferry services and it is also a base of the Italian navy. Part of the harbor is reserved for fishing vessels. Furthermore, the household manufacturer Indesit has its headquarters near Ancona and the region of Marche is the shoe factory Tod's base. The region mainly draws Italian tourists, but more and ore foreigners are discovering the city and its surroundings' charm.

Airports

The city's airport is located nine kilometers east of Ancona, in Falconara Marittima. Ancona Falconara Airport is easily accessible by rental car: take freeway A14 or motorway SS16. The exit to the airport is clearly indicated.

Public transport

Ancona has excellent public transport, operated by Conerobus. Buses are modern and run on time. Furthermore, there are good bus connections to other locations in the region, but on Sunday the schedule is very limited.

Traffic and Parking

A rental car is a perfect means of transport to explore the region, but Ancona's old center is better visited by foot. There are several big parking facilities in and around this center: Degli Archi (near the train station), Cialdini (on the via Cialdini), Stamira (piazza Pertini) and Traiano (near the harbor). Ancona is on freeway A14, this means that you can easily reach other locations. It is a lot of fun to explore the hinterland by rental car, for example the mountains of the Apennines.

Hotels

Ancona has a wide range of accommodations. From simple bed & breakfasts to summer houses and holiday resorts. Most of the hotels are on the beaches. There are also many atmospheric farms available for rent for holiday makers. If you would like to visit Ancona in July or August, we recommend booking your accommodation in advance. Outside these months, the hotels and resorts usually will not be fully booked. Many hotels are closed from October to April.
