Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina and historically seen one of the most interesting European cities. It's a meeting place of civilizations, where Eastern Orthodoxes, Catholics, Muslims and Jews have lived side by side for centuries. The city has largely recovered from the wars following the disintegration of Yugoslavia and Bosnians, Croats and Serbs live together in reasonable harmony.
The city has over 300,000 inhabitants.
Sarajevo is centrally located in the triangular Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city is built in a valley at an altitude of five hundred meters and surrounded by mountains, with the highest top being the Treskavica (2088 m). The Miljacka River runs straight through the city, from east to west.
During communist times there was a lot of heavy industry in Sarajevo, but only few of these companies have managed to survive. Nowadays industry mainly produces tobacco products, furniture, car parts and communication equipment. Both the national as well as the local government also provide employment.
Tourism is of major importance to the city. In summer months many visitors come to breathe the city's history, in winter months the ski slopes in the vicinity are popular.
Sarajevo's airport is situated six kilometers southwest of the city center, in the suburb Butmir. Sarajevo Airport is easily reachable by rental car. The route to the airport is indicated on the main road straight across the city.

Sarajevo has a clear street network, but signposting is scarce. If you want to explore the city in a rental car it's best to buy a good city map. In the city center you have to pay for street parking. There are various parking lots and garages where you can park your car.
Sarajevo has a reasonable supply of hostels, guesthouses and hotels. The supply of private rooms is huge, but they can be hard to find. In the old center there are various agencies that can help you.
