Hobart is located on the southeast coast of Tasmania, a large island near Australia's southwest coast. The city center lies on the west bank of the wide estuary of the Derwent River. West of Hobart lies Mount Wellington, an impressive mountain of 1271 meters high.
Hobart disposes of a busy seaport. From here French and Australian expeditions for example leave for Antarctica. In summer months many cruise ships moor here. Shipbuilding is linked with the port; high-speed catamarans are for example built in Hobart. There are also several breweries, a zinc smelter, and a large branch of the Cadbury chocolate factory. There are some vineyards in the surroundings of Hobart.
The city's airport, Hobart International Airport, is situated near Cambridge, about 15 kilometers east of the center. It's easily reachable by rental car via the Tasman Highway (freeway A3).
The central bus station is located in front of the city's post office. Hobart has efficient public transport, mainly exploited by Metro Tasmania, who also maintains connections with other places on the island. Some private bus companies also operate on Tasmania.
It's easy to find your way around Hobart by rental car. In the city center you have to pay for street parking, but there are also some parking garages where you can park your car. Just outside the center you can park for free during the weekend.
Hobart has a huge choice of accommodations, ranging from cheap accommodations for backpackers to luxury hotels. You can also rent many apartments. If you dispose of a rental car, a so-called Farm Stay in the city's surroundings may be a fun option. Bear in mind that Tasmania is very busy during Christmas and Easter, when many Australians take a short holiday here.
