Are you planning a fun road trip during your vacation? Would you prefer to travel from A to B without having to drive back? One-way car rental makes this possible. With this option, you return your car to a different location than where you picked it up. Here’s a breakdown of how it works and what’s involved.
Normally, you return your rental car to the same location where you picked it up. With one-way rental, it’s different—you return the car to a different location. This is especially common for long trips or special routes. It allows you to see as much of a country as possible or drive specific routes without having to turn back. It’s a great way to see and experience even more.
Many unique routes are well-suited for the “one-way” option. In the U.S., for example , San Francisco to Los Angeles is a well-known route. The famous Route 66, the road from Chicago to Los Angeles, has been officially decommissioned but remains a recognizable and popular choice. According to experts, the Romantic Road in Germany is one of the most beautiful routes in Europe and offers a mix of stunning nature and charming, historic towns. The Wild Atlantic Way follows the rugged, beautiful west coast of Ireland and is about 2,500 kilometers long. Other popular one-way routes include Porto to Lisbon through Portugal or Johannesburg to Cape Town, known as the Garden Route. The Palermo to Catania route winds through the impressive landscape of Sicily, covering a distance of about 700 kilometers. This is just a small selection of the many more beautiful routes out there.
How does it work? By unchecking “Return to the same location” on the homepage, you’ll see the options for a one-way reservation. This will show you which cars are available for one-way rentals. If no results are displayed, we recommend contacting customer service. We’ll then work with you to find a suitable option.
If a surcharge applies, it will be shown in the price summary. The price you see therefore includes any one-way surcharge. Once the booking is definitively confirmed, you’ll receive a voucher for it. This usually happens immediately or within a few minutes. In exceptional cases, it may take longer, as a one-way booking requires more coordination. As a result, the final booking may sometimes take a few more hours.
One-way trips can often be booked immediately and are sometimes customized. In the case of a customized booking, we’ll carefully coordinate your request with you.
The exact cost of the “one-way” option varies. In some cases, it’s free; more often, there’s a fee. The amount varies by country and provider. We’ll list these costs right when you book, so you’ll know exactly what to expect.
A one-way trip doesn’t just give you the opportunity to visit another country along the way. Traveling from one country to another is also an option that can be arranged through a one-way trip. Consider, for example, a trip from the U.S. to Canada. More countries in a single trip—extra adventure! Of course, such a trip is also custom-tailored and requires thorough preparation. We recommend that you contact us directly to discuss the possibilities and the steps to take.
Whether you’re passing through another country along the way or actually traveling from one country to another, both scenarios involve crossing a border. You’ll cross the border of one or more countries from the country where you rent your car. This border crossing must always be requested separately. Different conditions may apply, or there may be additional costs involved. This also varies by country and provider. So it’s a good idea to check this in advance so you aren’t caught off guard while on the road.
Especially on long trips like this one, it’s nice and advisable to be able to take turns driving. This keeps things safe and allows you to enjoy the journey in a more relaxed way for longer. As a co-driver, you must meet the same requirements as the renter. This primarily concerns the minimum age and the minimum length of time you’ve held a driver’s license. So, when picking up the rental car as a co-driver, be sure to bring the same documents: a valid driver’s license and identification.
As with all other cases, it’s also possible to make changes or cancel a one-way rental. If you do this at least 48 hours before the start of the rental period, there are no fees. Keep in mind, however, that rates may change in the meantime.
The one-way option is a great choice, often used for long trips and long distances. We understand that this requires careful planning and may raise some questions. We’re happy to help answer any questions you may have. Contact us here; we’re here to help!
