Bolzano is the capital of the Italian province of South Tyrol and the gateway to the Dolomites. You can make beautiful trips in the mountains and in winter the city's surroundings are a popular skiing area. In the city you'll also find the Museum of Archaeology, where you can visit the famous Ötzi the Iceman.
Bolzano has 100,000 inhabitants. The city and province are officially bilingual. In the city about three-quarters of the inhabitants speak Italian; in the countryside the ratio is opposite: here the majority speaks German. In German the city is called Bozen by the way.
The economy of Bolzano and the region is diverse: there are several vineyards and people grow a lot of fruit. Dairy industry also plays an important part, just like tourism. Because Bolzano is the provincial capital, many people are employed by the public administration and service industries.
Airport Bolzano Dolomites is situated 5 kilometers southeast of the city and is easily reachable by rental car. From the city center you first take the Via Roma south and then the Via Claudia Augusta which leads to the airport. The airport can also be reached via freeway A22.
Bolzano has excellent public transport. There are 17 bus lines with which you can reach any destination in and around the city. As of 9 p.m. the schedule is limited: lines 1, 5 and 3 are then combined into line 153 and for the rest only lines 2 and 10A run (until 1 a.m.). There are also funiculars to the three mountain villages in the city's vicinity.
Older, polluting cars (so-called EURO-0 cars) are prohibited in the historical city center. In winter months cars in this category are banned from the entire city. In case of severe pollution this ban can be extended to cars in the EURO-1 category. You have to pay for street parking. Attention: only residents with a permit are allowed to park next to a white painted curb. There are several parking garages in and around the city center where you can park your rental car.
Bolzano is highly geared towards tourists and so there's no shortage of accommodation in the city. Around Christmas Bolzano gets very busy. If you want to stay in the city that time of year we recommend booking your accommodation well in advance.
