Introduction

Puerto del Rosario is the capital of Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands. Until 1956 the city carried a less prosaic name: Puerto Cabras (Goat harbor). The city itself isn't particularly attractive, but the beautiful beaches and the dry, rough, desert like landscape of the island draw many tourists every year. There are as many as 150 beaches on the island, consisting both of fine, white sand and black, volcanic rocks.

Population

About 20,000 people live in Puerto del Rosario.

Location

Puerto del Rosario is located on the east coast of Fuerteventura. One of the most popular tourist centers, Caleta de Fuste, lies just south of town.

Economy

Tourism forms the main source of income. In addition cattle breeding is an important pillar and this is well visible on the island: goats bred for their meat and the milk they produce graze everywhere. Tomatoes and potatoes are also grown and exported via the harbor and Puerto del Rosario's airport.

Airports

The airport is situated five kilometers south of Puerto del Rosario and near the tourist center Caleta de Fuste. Aeropuerto de Fuerteventura is easily reachable by rental car. Both from the capital and from Fuste you follow the FV-2 (south and north respectively). The airport lies directly off this road. The exit to the airport is clearly signposted.

Public Transport

There are bus connections between the capital and the main tourist destinations. There's for example a bus line from Puerto del Rosario to the airport, Correlejo, Caleta de Fuste, Morro del Jable and Cotillo. Don't trust official arrival and departure times blindly! Ask locals for the schedule of the busses.

Traffic and Parking

Puerto del Rosario has a very regular street pattern and it's therefore not difficult to find your way around. A highway (FV-3) runs north, west and south of the city which connects to the two main roads of the island, FV-1 (north of Puerto del Rosario) and FV-2 (south of town). The highway network on Fuerteventura is good, but the smaller gravel or dirt roads through the mountains are full of hairpins. Drive carefully here.

Parking is practically no problem anywhere. Note that it's prohibited to park next to curbs with a yellow or white line. A blue line means that you can only park at a charge.

Hotels

The capital has a limited supply of accommodation, but the rest of Fuerteventura has a good supply of hotels and holiday homes, although not suiting everyone's purse. Accommodation for budget travelers is almost non-existent. The island is by far not as developed as for example Gran Canaria. Holiday homes can be remote (but extremely beautiful!); a rental car is then indispensable.
