Introduction
Palma de Mallorca is the capital of Mallorca and the largest city of the Spanish Balearic Islands. Palma has a beautiful historical center with amongst others an impressive cathedral and an Arab quarter.
Population
The city has over 400,000 inhabitants, almost half of the total population of Mallorca.
Location
Palma is located in the southwest of Mallorca. The coast southwest of the city is rocky; the better tourist beaches lie east of Palma.
Economy
Agriculture on Mallorca produces citrus fruit, almonds and olives, which are exported via the harbor or Palma airport. In addition there is a textile and paper industry in the capital. The main source of income for Palma and all of Mallorca however is tourism.
Airports
The airport of Palma the Mallorca is situated eight kilometers east of the city center. Aeropuerto de Palma de Mallorca is easily reachable by rental car. From the city center you follow the Ma-19 (Autovia de Levante) which leads directly to the airport. The route to the airport is clearly signposted.
Public Transport
In the capital Palma de Mallorca bus transportation is arranged by Empresa Municipal de Transportes Urbanes de Palma de Mallorca (EMT). There are good connections with nearby beaches. Line 50 is a tourist bus which stops at the most important attractions and shopping centers. It's a double decker of which the top part is open. In addition there are night busses in Palma leaving from the entertainment district Passeig Maritim.
Palma also has a metro line, from the city center to the university grounds.
Traffic and Parking
Especially in summer months Palma de Mallorca is a busy city. Traffic can be chaotic and finding a free parking space isn't always easy. In the city center you have to pay at parking meters to park your rental car. In blue zones you can only park for a limited amount of time. It's prohibited to park next to a continuous yellow line. Anyway, there are several garages where you can park your car.
Hotels
Mallorca is one of the busiest holiday destinations in Europe. Therefore there is no shortage of accommodation in and around the capital Palma. It's however necessary to book your hotel room well in advance. Not only in busy summer months, but also in winter, when many hotels close and the supply is limited.
