Location information for Menorca
Introduction
Menorca thanks its name to the fact that it is smaller than Majorca. Menorca is also much more touristic. That is actually rather strange, because did you know that the amount of beaches on Menorca is much larger than the beaches of Majorca and Ibiza together? It is a perfect holiday destination for people who want to enjoy beautiful beaches, but are not looking for a crowd.
During the summer months there are many colorful festivals which originate from the Middle Ages.
Population
Menorca has about 90,000 inhabitants.
Location
Menorca lies north-east of Majorca and is approximately 48 kilometers long and 16 kilometers wide. The highest point is the hill El Toro (358 m).
Economy
Although much less touristic than Majorca, tourism plays an important role in the local economy. However, the authorities make sure tourism does not have a big impact on the environment. Three-quarter of the island is protected nature reserve. Many rare turtles and bird species live there. Furthermore there are vineyards and a modest shoe industry on Menorca.
Airports
The airport of Menorca lies 4.5 kilometers south-west of the islands' capital city Maó, along the Me-14 which connects to the Me-12 to the city center. By rental car you can reach the city center within 10 to 15 minutes.
Public transport
There is a regular bus service on the main road of Menorca (Me-1), which connects the capital city Maó with Alaior, Es Mercadal, Ferreries and Ciutadella. There are sufficient taxis as well.
Traffic and parking
In the capital center and in popular tourist centers it can become very crowded. Besides that the streets are narrow. Nevertheless, a rental car is the ideal means of transport in Menorca. This way you can enter all small roads on the island and enjoy the undeteriorated nature and scenic villages.
Hotels
Menorca has a good hotel offer. There are also some apartment complexes, among other places, near the only golf course on the island. Accommodation is usually not fully booked in Menorca, except for the summer months. In that period you should better book a room in advance.
