Introduction

It is hard to describe this city in a few words. It is a "fast" city, rich in art, monuments and exceptional views, all of which have managed to keep their charm through the centuries. In addition, Rome is, of course the capital, and largest city, of Italy.

Population

At the moment, Rome has about 3.8 million inhabitants. In Roman history people came to Rome from far away to study and trade. The population has always been divers. Nowadays, 80% of Rome's population is of Italian origin.

Location

Rome is located in the Lazio region. Two rivers flow through Rome and into the Mediterranean, to which Rome is close. What is special about Rome is that Vatican City, the "Headquarters" of the Roman Catholic Church, is located in its center.

Economy

Today, Rome has a diverse and dynamic economy, which grows even faster than the rest of Italy's economy. Rome's economy thrives on innovation, technology and communication. One of the most important branches of the economy is tourism. In addition, the following areas are important: banking, publishing, insurance, fashion, high-tech, real estate, the movie industry and aviation.

Many international headquarters are located in Rome's "Esposizione Universale Roma". This is a business district, and at the same time one of Rome's most exclusive residential areas. Similar areas are "Torrino", "Magliana", "Parco de Medici-Laurentine".

Airports

Rome has an intercontinental airport, known as "Rome Fiumicino Airport. Its official name is "Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport", with the abbreviation FCO. "Giovan-Battista Pastine" or "Rome Ciampino Airport" is an international airport that is located on the south-eastern side of Rome. This airport processes mainly chartered and regional European flights. The third airport of Rome, in the north of the city, processes mainly helicopter and private flights.

Public transport

Rome has a subway, called "Metropolitana" or "Rome Metro", which consists of two lines, with extensions underway. Rome's biggest train station is "Statione Termini". In addition, there is an extensive bus network.

Traffic and Parking

Chronic traffic jams in the city during the 1970's and 1980's have led to the present ban on traffic in the city center on workdays from 6 to 18. This zone is called: "Zona a Traffico Limitato" or "ZTL". Recently, the following two areas are closed to traffic at night: "Trastevere" and "S. Lorenzo". More of these zones will most likely be added in the near future.

Parking places along the street have in many parts of the city been transformed in paid parking places, among other things in the form of underground car parks.

Hotels

Rome has a large number of hotels. Nevertheless, we recommend booking in advance. Spring and autumn are the busiest periods.
