Introduction
Karpathos is the capital of the Greek island of the same name. The capital is also called Pigadia. Because of the isolated position many traditional customs are still current on the island. You can for example see this by the traditional costumes and during the annual colorful Panagia festival (Assumption).
Population
The entire island has over 6,000 inhabitants, of which about half lives in the capital. In summer months the number of people on Karpathos is significantly higher because of the tourists visiting the island.
Location
The island is located in between Crete and Rhodes. The capital lies in the southeast of the island. Karpathos Town is surrounded by small villages such as Menetes, Arkasa, Aperi, Volada, Othos and Pyles.
Economy
Tourism on Karpathos is mainly concentrated in the capital. So economy very much relies on income from tourists. Traditional sources of income include fishing, the production of olive oil and goat cheese, and growing citrus fruit. There are also many ferry connections to other Greek islands.
Airports
Karpathos airport is situated at the most southern point of the island, eight kilometers southwest of Karpathos Town. The airport is easily reachable by rental car via the winding road to the hamlet Kipos. The route to the airport is signposted.
Public Transport
The main bus station of the island is in Karpathos Town. There is a regular service to the villages on Karpathos and to the popular beaches.
Traffic and Parking
A rental car is an ideal means of transportation to discover the island Karpathos. Do mind the small, winding roads and poor signposting. Fortunately the island is so small that you can hardly get lost. Also bear in mind the animals on the road.
Hotels
Karpathos Town is the island's center of tourism. There is therefore no shortage of accommodation. In summer months the island is very busy and many hotels close during winter. It's therefore recommended to always book your hotel room well in advance.
