Car rental Corfu (city)
Introduction
Corfu is the capital of the Greek island of the same name in the Ionic Sea. It's a tourist attraction, not least for the wonderfully preserved historic center, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007.
Population
Corfu City has over 100,000 inhabitants.
Location
Corfu City is located on the east side of the island of the same name in the far northwest of Greece. The northern part of the island is separated from Albania by a small strait.
Economy
For centuries grapes and olives have been grown on the island. The capital plays an important role in trading and processing these agricultural products. Tourism is also extremely important, not only for the island, but also for Corfu City. Large cruise ships moor in the harbor and there are ferry connections to among others Venice, Ancona, Bari and Brindisi in Italy, and other Greek cities such as Igoumenitsa and Patra.
Airports
The airport is officially called Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport, but is usually referred to as Corfu Airport or Kerkyra Airport. The airport is situated about three kilometers south of Corfu City. The airport is easily reachable by rental car and you can't go wrong, as there's only one road from the airport to Corfy City.
Public Transport
There is a good, but not always regular, bus service from the main bus station in Corfu City to other places on the island.
Traffic and Parking
You'll have no trouble finding your way around in a rental car in Corfu City. Some streets in the old center are very narrow though. Outside the city some roads are excellently asphalted (like the eastern coastal road), but other roads are unpaved. Drive carefully on these.
Hotels
There is no shortage of accommodations in Corfu City. You can stay in simple guesthouses, but there's also a large supply of mid-range hotels and luxurious accommodations. Corfu is a popular tourist destination. We therefore recommend booking your hotel room well in advance, especially if you want to stay in Corfu City in the summer months.
