Introduction
Rovaniemi is for many tourists the starting point to explore Lapland. The city itself doesn't have much attractions, but die surrounding area has more. Santa Claus' home is exactly on the Arctic circle, and he is not only home during Christmas, but all year round. You can also visit the Arktikum: a museum about people and animals in Lapland and the Lapland culture and history. All the exhibitions in the museum are underground.
Population
Rovaniemi has 35,000 inhabitants.
Location
The city lies in the north of Finland, just below the Arctic circle. Rovaniemi was built at the confluence of two rivers, the Kemijoki and the Ounasjoki. Through the northern region, winters can become very cold, and summers are generally pretty cool. In July the sun doesn't set, but in January it shines for only 3½ hours per day.
Economy
Tourism is of great importance to the city. People come to Rovaniemi to see the midnight sun in the summer, or the Northern Lights in the winter. Furthermore, there is plenty to do in the area: from skiing to riding with the huskies or reindeer, to ice fishing or rafting.
The city is also the administrative and educational center of Lapland: nearly one in three residents of Rovaniemi is a student.
Airports
The airport of Rovaniemi lies 10 kilometers north of the city. The airport is especially busy during Christmas season: it processes about 400,000 passengers in two months.
The airport is easily accessible by rental car: highway 4 (E-75) runs from the center of the city directly to the airport. The exit is clearly indicated.
Public transportation
There are many bus companies connecting destinations in and around Rovaniemi, but in the evenings and weekends the services are limited.
Traffic and parking
In the center of the city you must pay to park in the street or in any of the garages. In some areas you can park with a blue parking card. A rental car is a suitable way to visit attractions in the area of Rovaniemi. Firstly, visit for example the Ranua Wildlife Park, 80 km south of the city. You can easily reach the park with a rental car by following road 78 in the direction of Kajaani.

Rovaniemi has a good supply of accommodation: from simple guest houses and Bed & Breakfasts to four star hotels. A very special place to stay is the Arctic Snow Hotel at Lake Lehtojärvi. As the name suggests, the hotel is made of snow and ice. There is a camp site right by the city center, directly on the Kemijoki river.
