Introduction
Macon is a city in the American state Georgia. One of the city's attractions is the Harriet Tubman Museum, the largest museum in Georgia dedicated to the history and art of African Americans. There is also a park and museum dedicated to ancient cultures in this area. At least 12,000 years ago an Indian settlement was already reported at the place where nowadays Macon is located.
Population
The city has almost 100,000 inhabitants.
Location
Macon likes to present itself as being 'The Heart of Georgia'. The city is centrally located in this southern American state, on the so-called Fall Line, where the hills of the Piedmont plateau turn into the lower coastal area. The Ocmulgee River runs straight through Macon.
Economy
Macon is not a very thriving city with little industrial activity. One of the main employers is the American army. The large aviation base Robins Air Force Base is situated just south of the city. Macon is also a center of higher education.
Airports
Middle Georgia Regional Airport is situated fourteen kilometers south of Macon. It only plays a minor role in American commercial aviation. The airport is easily reachable by rental car. From the city center you first follow Broadway, which turns into Houston Road. Next, near Oak Grove, you take Hawkinsville Road. This road leads to the airport. The route to the airport is also clearly signposted.
Public Transport
Macon has good public bus transportation. During the day busses run on average every half hour. Especially for tourists trolley busses run along the most important attractions in the center of Macon. There are three different trolley busses (MITSI, Miss Molly and Sweet Melissa), but they all follow more or less the same route.
Traffic and Parking
A rental car is an ideal means of transportation to explore Macon and surroundings. In the city center you best park your rental car in one of the parking garages. Traffic in Macon is also very busy during rush hour.
Hotels
Macon has a large supply of accommodation. Cheap motels are mainly concentrated along Arkwright Road and Eisenhower Parkway. More luxurious hotels can be found mainly in the city center. Macon is not flooded with tourists. In general it's therefore not required to book your hotel room a long time in advance.
