Kiruna is the northernmost city in Sweden. The town is an ideal basis for people who want to discover the rough nature in this part of Sweden.
The town has over 20,000 inhabitants.
Kiruna is located in the far north of Sweden, 145 kilometers above the Arctic Circle. The town is built on a more than 500 meter high hill between the Tome (north of town) and Kalix (south of Kiruna) rivers. To the west are mountains, such as the highest mountain in Sweden, the Kebnekaise (2111 m). East of town lie vast woods.
Near the mountain Kiirunavaara lies a large, underground iron ore mine, the main source of income for the town. The old mine near the mountain Luossavaara is closed; it's now a skiing slope in winter months. Winter sports form the second important pillar of local economy. There's also a space center and Virgin Atlantic has plans to build a so-called Spaceport near Kiruna for commercial space flights.
Kiruna Airport is situated eight kilometers southeast of town. There are several flights to and from Stockholm, often via Luleå or Umeå. The airport is easily reachable by rental car. The airport is situated right off the E10; near the industrial area Östra you take the exit to the airport (Flygvältsvägen). The way to the airport is clearly signposted.
Busses run within Kiruna and to destinations in the vicinity. Keep in mind that service at night and during weekends is very restricted.
A rental car is an ideal means of transportation to explore this remote part of Sweden. In general the roads are in good condition, but sometimes very narrow. Following winter the road conditions are often worse because of severe weather. Swedes are quite quick to repair the roads. Also keep in mind crossing game (reindeers and elks). The nearest bigger place is Gällivare (115 kilometers to the south).
There's a reasonable supply of accommodation in Kiruna, with in winter the inevitable Ice Hotel as tourist attraction. Apart from guesthouses and hotels, you can stay in apartments in Kiruna. In summer months there's a campsite outside town.
