Gerona-Costa Brava Airport
Gerona-Costa Brava is located in the north-east of Spain, 12 kilometres outside Gerona city. It is an important airport for tourists who go to the Costa Brava or to Barcelona and it is also the gateway to the Pyrenees, to the north of Gerona. It is especially thanks to the arrival of the Irish budget airline Ryanair in 2003 that Gerona has become more important. Ryanair uses Gerona as a hub for connections all over Europe. To increase capacity, the runway is being extended and the taxi lanes for airplanes are being improved. It is estimated that the airport will process 4 million passengers a year by 2010.
Gerona (Girona in Catalan) Airport has no rail connection, but it can be reached by bus, car or taxi. At the airport itself there is one hotel, but in the surrounding areas there are more hotels.
At the airport there is a large duty-free shop and a few small shops. There are three restaurants. There are no separate facilities for disabled people, and nor is there a First Aid station. There are, however, an ATM machine and a money exchange machine in the arrivals terminal.
In the aviation industry Gerona Airport is indicated by the abbreviations GRO (IATA airport code) and LEGE (ICAO airport code).
