Introduction
La Coruña (official Galician name: A Coruña) is a harbor city in the northwest of Spain. Around the city lie beautiful beaches and the surf of the Atlantic Ocean attracts many surfers. Sailors also frequently visit La Coruña. The area is hilly and green and the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela is only an hour's drive from La Coruña.
Population
The city has 250,000 inhabitants, but with the suburbs included the urban area of La Coruña and surrounding area has more than 600,000 people.
Location
La Coruña lies in the northwest of Spain, in the autonomous region Galicia, on the Atlantic Ocean. Because of this location it's not very hot - in Spanish terms - in summer, and the winters are mild.
Economy
La Coruña is the economic engine of Galicia. This is not only because of the harbor where especially fish, oil and other bulk products are supplied. The city is also the administrative center of the region and home to one of the largest textile companies in the world, Inditex (the mother company of, amongst others, the Zara clothing stores).
Tourism also plays a major role: the port is a favorite mooring site for cruise ships and sailors.
Airports
The airport Alvedro lies 8 kilometers south of the city. There are flights to domestic and international destinations (especially with budget airlines). The airport is easily accessible by rental car: it lies right next to the Autopista del Atlántico (AP-9) and is reachable from downtown via the AC-211.
The larger airport of Santiago de Compostela lies about 50 kilometers from La Coruña.
Public transportation
There is good public transportation in La Coruña. All along the boulevard is a tram line, from the Riazor stadium to the town hall on the other side of the city. There are also many bus lines running frequently between 06:00 and 23:30 (Sundays and public holidays from 07:30).
If you want to visit places outside La Coruña (and we certainly encourage you to do so), then a rental car is essential.
Traffic and parking
As an economic and administrative city, it can become extremely busy in the heart of the city. Therefore, it is better to do sightseeing on foot. There are several car parks and sites where you can park your rental car.
Hotels
La Coruña has a wide range of accommodation. There are luxurious hotels, middle class hotels, simple guest houses and various campsites in the area of the city. We do advise you to book your accommodation in advance during the summer months, especially if you have your eye on a specific hotel.
