Introduction
Bodø is the capital of the Norwegian Nordland county. One of the main attractions of the city is the Norwegian Aviation Museum. Bodø is also situated in a magnificent environment of fjords and mountains.
Population
The city has over 46,000 inhabitants.
Location
Bodø is situated in the north of Norway, just above the Arctic Circle. The city is situated on the Saltfjord which has a narrow connection with the Skjerstadfjord thirty kilometers east of Bodø. These Saltstraumen form the strongest tidal current in the world. Every six hours, up to 400 m³ of seawater passes through a three kilometers long and 150 m wide strait.
Economy
Bodø is an important transport junction, where sea, rail and air routes come together. It's also an important base of the Norwegian army and healthcare, higher education and services also provide much employment.
Airports
The Airport of Bodø is situated only two kilometers south of the city center, right off the Saltfjord. There are only flights to and from domestic destinations. Road number 80 (the road along the Saltfjord) ends at the airport and the airport is therefore easily reachable by rental car.
Public Transport
Bodø is a small town that can easily be explored on foot. Still there is a city bus service. Bear in mind though that the schedule late at night and during weekends is limited. There are also good bus and boat connections with places nearby, such as Kjerringøy, Saltstraumen and Værran (the islands off the coast).
Traffic and Parking
In the city center you need to pay for parking in the street during the day on working days. In many streets a maximum parking time applies. You can better park your rental car in one of the parking garages.
Hotels
There is no shortage of accommodation in Bodø. Ranging from basic guesthouses to luxury hotels. We do recommend you book your hotel room well in advance if you want to stay in Bodø during high season (the summer months).
