Introduction
Podgorica is the capital of Montenegro. The name means 'under the little hill', a reference to the hills mainly north of town. When Montenegro was still part of Yugoslavia, the city was called Titograd, after the former Yugoslavian dictator Tito.
Population
The city has over 150,000 inhabitants, more than a quarter of the total population of Montenegro.
Location
Podgorica is centrally located in Montenegro, at the confluence of the Ribnica and Morača rivers. The Montenegran city is also surrounded by a lot of water: the rivers Zeta, Cijevna, Sitnica and Mareza, and Lake Skadar. The city lies at the foothills of the Gorica Hill (after which the city is named). Other hills in the vicinity, mainly north of the city, are Malo brdo, Velje brdo, Ljubović and Čardak.
Economy
During the Yugoslavian dominance, a lot of mainly heavy industry was brought to town. After the Yugoslavian Federation fell apart many of these factories had a hard time and some even had to close down. Two of the largest factories that remained are the aluminum smelter KAP and AD Plantaže, a wine and brandy making company. Other rising economic sectors are financial services, telecommunication and construction.
Airports
Podgorica's airport is situated ten kilometers south of the city center. Podgorica Airport is easily reachable by rental car. From the city center you follow the E-65 south. The exit to the airport is right after the aluminum smelter. The route to the airport is clearly signposted.
Public Transport
Public transportation in Podgorica consists of bus lines that are exploited by various, private companies. The local population prefers to use taxi vans, which are quicker and not much more expensive.
Traffic and Parking
It's not difficult to find your way around in Podgorica by rental car. The city has a regular layout of streets and the roads are in a decent to good condition. Signposting however can leave much to be desired. In the city center you need to pay for street parking. Podgorica's parking police tows cars immediately that have exceeded the parking limit, or are parked in the wrong place!
Hotels
There is a reasonable supply of accommodation in and around Podgorica. Along the main arterial roads on the edge of town you find many cheap hotels. More luxurious accommodation can be found in the city center. In general you don't need to reserve your hotel room in Podgorica long time in advance.
