Introduction
Pythagoreio is an old port and the former capital of the Greek island Samos. Until 1955 the town was called Tigani, but that year it was named after the great Greek mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras, who was born in Tigani. The ruins of the old town are, just like the nearby Heraion, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In Pythagoreio live about 10,000 people.
Location
Pythagoreio is located on the southwest coast of Samos. It's separated from the Turkish mainland by a small strait of one and a half kilometers wide. The capital Vathy (also called Samos City) lies in the northeast of the island.
Economy
Samos is world famous for the sweet Muscat wine that is produced. In addition the island produces honey, olives (and olive oil), citrus fruit and figs.
Airports
The airport of Samos is situated four kilometers west of Pythagoreio, right near the popular Potokaki beach. Samos International Airport is also called Aristarchos Airport and is easily reachable by rental car. The airport lies directly off the main road to Pythagoreio and the capital Vathy. The route to the airport is clearly signposted.
Public Transport
Busses form the public transport between most places and the tourist beaches on Samos. These busses don't always run according to the official schedule though. Busses don't run on public holidays. There are also ferry connections with various beaches, other Greek islands and with Piraeus (before Athens).
Traffic and Parking
In the busier cities and tourist places it's prohibited to park next to a continuous yellow line on the curb. Keep in mind that streets can be very narrow and steep. On the country roads you need to be aware of hairpins and holes in the road. You can also run into flocks of sheep or goats.
Hotels
In Pythagoreio there's only a limited supply of accommodation. Most hotels and holiday resorts can be found along the popular tourist beaches. Samos is a popular summer holiday destination. In winter many hotels close. We therefore recommend to always booking your hotel room well in advance.
