Location information for Argostoli

Car rental Argostoli
Introduction
Argostoli is the capital of the Greek island Kefalonia. Most villages and towns on the island were razed to the ground during an earthquake in 1953. Argostoli therefore has a reasonably modern appearance. It's a popular hibernation place for retirees from colder, western European countries.
Population
The town has over 12,000 inhabitants.
Location
Argostoli is located in the west of Greece, on the island Kefalonia, the biggest of the Ionic Islands. The town is situated on the east side of a deep bay.
Economy
Because of the hilly landscape only a small part of Kefalonia is suitable for agriculture. There are olive orchards and there's small-scale production of grains and vegetables. Tourism plays an ever increasing role in local economy. The European Union has made money available to improve the tourist infrastructure on Kefalonia.
Airports
The island airport is situated ten kilometers south of Argostoli. Especially in the summer months there are direct charter flights to many European cities, but out of season it's often easier to fly to Kefalonia via Athens. Kefalonia Island International Airport is easily reachable by rental car via the Lassis Aerodromiou.
Public Transport
Busses run from Argostoli to other places on the island and to destinations on mainland Greece, but the frequency is irregular. It's more convenient to explore the island by rental car.
Traffic and Parking
It's prohibited to park next to a continuous yellow line. On some busy streets you can park on one side of the street during even months and on the other side during uneven months. Mind the directions! Drive carefully on country roads. The roads are narrow and winding and you can also stumble across flocks of sheep and goats.
Hotels
There are (as yet) relatively few hotels in Argostoli. Most accommodations are apartments or villas (often with private pool). If you want to visit Argostoli in the summer months we recommend you book your accommodation well in advance.
