Introduction
Memmingen is a town in the German federal state Bavaria. It's an old town, founded by the Romans. The historical center with old buildings, castles and mansions has been extremely well preserved. One of the main historical events in Europe, the Wallenstein Festival, is held in Memmingen every four years.

The town has over 40,000 inhabitants.
Location
Memmingen is located in the western part of the southern federal state Bavaria. It's located on the river Iller, about fifty kilometers south of Ulm and a hundred kilometers west of the Bavarian capital Munich.
Economy
Industry in Memmingen mainly consists of companies specialized in food and electronics. Tourism also plays an important role in local economy. Memmingen is also called the 'Gateway to the Allgäu'. That region is dominated by hills and the foothills of the Alps.
Airports
Allgäu-Airport is situated almost three kilometers east of the city center. It's mainly used by budget airlines for flights to various European destinations. The airport is easily reachable by rental car via highway A-96 running north of the city. From the beltway you can also take the Augsburger Strasse to the airport. The route to the airport is clearly signposted.
Public Transport
Most attractions in Memmingen are located in the old center, which you can easily explore on foot. If you want to visit destinations that are further out, there is excellent public transport in the city.
Traffic and Parking
You need to pay for street parking in the center of Memmingen. It's easier to park your rental car in one of the parking garages. An electronic system directs you to the nearest garage that has space available.
Hotels
Memmingen has a good supply of accommodation. You can stay in modern hotels, but also in friendly guesthouses or a traditional 'Gasthaus'. There is also a separate parking lot for camper vans.
