Introduction

Valencia is a vibrant and friendly city, and it is known as one of Spain's best places to go out. The city also offers great art and museums. Recently, a new cultural and scientific complex has been built.

Population

Valencia is the third largest city of Spain, with about 740,000 inhabitants.

Location

Valencia is situated in the middle of the Spanish east coast. It is not on the Mediterranean, but on the Gulf of Valencia. The Balearic Islands are located at about 200 kilometers from Valencia. The Turia river runs through the city. This river has its origins in the mountains to the north-east of the city, at about 100 kilometers.

Economy

Valencia is known for its street life and nightlife. There are many festivals and places to go out in this city that attract many tourists. In addition, the tourists come for the museums, the art and the beaches. All in all, tourism provides many jobs.

The modern part of Valencia, which includes the new cultural and scientific complex, is a center for trade and industry. Trade includes the fruit and vegetable sector, which has to do with the fact that Valencia is situated in a region with a lot of fertile ground that is suitable for the cultivation of these types of products. Valencia's industry consists to a large extent of pottery industry.

Airports

Valencia has one airport: Aeropuerto de Manises, located at 10 kilometers to the west of the city. Everyday, Aeropuerto de Manises processes flights from London, Paris, Milan and Lisbon. Domestic flights are processed on a daily basis, among other places to and from Madrid, Ibiza and Palma de Mallorca.

Public transport

If you do not have a rental car, you can use Valencia's public transport network. Valencia has an integrated bus, tram and metro network. The EMT buses provide public transport in the city center. The metro provides public transport in the city's suburbs and connects them with the surrounding villages. The tram will take you to the beach and the harbor, among other places. From Valencia, many ferries depart for the Balearics. If you do not have a rental car, but you want to go to Barcelona or, for example Alicante, you can either take the train or the bus. The metrobus or train will take you from the airport to the city.

Traffic and Parking

Driving your rental car in Valencia will not pose a problem, although finding a place to park your car may. A good way to park your car is to use the large underground parking facilities, which are located underneath Plazas de la Reina and Alonso el Magnanimo and near the train station. The latter covers the area between Call Xativa and Gran Via.

Hotels

Because Valencia is a business city, there are many hotels that offer discounts during the holiday season and at weekends. This also applies to the more expensive hotels, the cheaper hotels usually have fewer rooms available on these days. Whether or not to book ahead therefore depends on when you arrive. At any rate, it is advisable to book in advance if you want a cheaper hotel, or a more expensive hotel outside of the holiday season or weekends.
