Location information for Zagreb

Car rental Zagreb
Introduction
Zagreb is the capital of Croatia, the mediaeval center has indisputable Italian influences. Since peace in the Balkan returned, this city attracts many visitors every year. No wonder, because the city offers a terrace culture against an historical background and the trendy shops can compete with those in London and Milan.
Population
The city with more than 800,000 inhabitants is the largest one of Croatia, if the urban surrounding areas are calculated as well, Zagreb has more than 1 million inhabitants.
Location
Zagreb is situated in the north of Croatia, about 20 kilometers from the border of Slovenia. The city is built on both river banks of the Sava and at the foot of the mountain Medvednica.
Economy
Zagreb is an important junction between Central and Eastern Europe and therefore trade is very important for the city's economy. Concerning the industrial production, the core is pharmacy, electrotechnology, chemistry, textile and food. More and more tourists discover Zagreb; the city is visited by more than half a million foreigners each year, most of them come from Austria, Germany and Italy.
Airports
The international airport of Zagreb lies 14 kilometers southeast of the city. Budget airlines often fly to other airports in the region such as Rijeka, Ljubljana, Graz, Klagenfurt and Triete.
Public transport
Zagreb has an excellent public transport system that consists of streetcars, buses and city trains. Streetcars run 24 hours a day, although at night with a lower frequency. Buses are convenient for transport to destinations outside the city center. Tickets are valid for buses and streetcars. If you use public transport several times a day, it is more economic to purchase a day ticket instead of paying for each ride.
The higher and lower parts of the city (the old and the new city) are connected through an historical cableway.
Traffic and parking
With the economic development of Zagreb, the traffic in and around the city also increased, however the infrastructure is not prepared for this. Indeed there is a ring road around the city, but it gets very busy in the morning and evening rush hours.
Outside rush hours it is hard to find a parking space in Zagreb, the city is working hard on the construction of underground parking garages though. Some of them are already done, such as the one at the Importanne Centar and the Kaptol Centar.
Hotels
In recent years the hotels in Zagreb have improved noticeably, older hotels have been renovated thoroughly and dozens of new hotels have been built. You have a large choice in all price categories. Do take into account that Zagreb is becoming more popular and that the city attracts many business people. Booking a room well in advance is very recommendable.
