Beauvais is a charming old town in the north of France with a turbulent history. The town was often a plaything in wars between the English and the French. In front of the city hall there is a statue of Jeanne Hachette, the local heroine who personally defeated the army of the Burgundian duke Karel de Stout in 1472.
