Introduction
Already in the 11th century Tampere was an important trading post, but the city continued to grow, especially with the arrival of the textile industry in the late 18th century. The city's surroundings are beautiful: lakes and forests that invite you to undertake all kinds of activities, such as long hikes, swimming, fishing or sailing. The city itself has a beautiful cathedral, but one of the biggest attractions is the Särkänniemi amusement park, which has a dolphinarium. Furthermore, there are many museums about Tampere's history as a workers' town; there even is a Lenin Museum.
Population
The entire agglomeration of Tampere is the second largest urban area in Finland (after Helsinki). The town itself has a population of about 210,000.
Location
Tampere is located in the southwest of Finland, along a water connection between two lakes: the Näsijärvi Lake north of the city and the Pyhäjärvi Lake south of the city. Thanks to the height difference between these two lakes (18 meters), Tampere has cheap energy. This was the main reason for the metal and textile industry to settle in Tampere.
The city is located 170 km northwest of Helsinki.
Economy
The metal and textile industries have largely disappeared from Tampere. In its place came the electrical and information communications technology. Furthermore, there is paper industry. Also, Tampere is an important educational center, for example it has general and technical universities.
Airports
The name of the airport is Tampere-Pirkkala Airport and it is located 17 km southwest of the city. The airport is easily accessible by rental car: from Tampere take the 3495 and just south of the city turn onto highway E-12. The exit to the airport (road 308) is clearly indicated.
Public Transport
Tampere has excellent public bus transport. Most of the buses run through the main Hämeenkatu Street and have stops at or near the Keskustori Square. The center of Tampere is not very big: you can easily explore it on foot.
Traffic and Parking
The street pattern of Tampere is very clear, you will not find it difficult to find your way. You should always keep in mind that there are many one-way streets in the center. Sometimes, it can be difficult to park your car in the street, but fortunately there are many parking facilities where you can park your rental car.
If you are going to explore the area around Tampere by rental car, please look for the signs that warn about crossing wildlife (elk), especially during sunrise and sunset.
Hotels
Tampere has a wide range of accommodations in all categories. Generally you will not have any trouble finding a room, but in summer it is recommended to book your hotel room well in advance. The nearest campsite is located in Härmälä directly on the lake and about 3km from the city center.
