Introduction

Lamezia Terme is a city in the Italian region of Calabria. The municipality was created in 1968 by the merger of three communes, of which Nicastro was the greatest one. The city lies close to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The coast has wonderful sand beaches. Furthermore, you can find relics from the (ancient) Romans and Greeks in the area.

Population

The city has almost 75,000 inhabitants.

Location

Lamezia Terme is centrally located in Calabria, the southern province that represents the toe of the Italian ‘boot’. The Tyrrhenian Sea is situated to the west of the city and well over 70 kilometers away, lies the Ionian Sea side. Reggio di Calabria is situated 135 kilometers to the south (at the far end of the toe of the Italian boot).

Economy

Agriculture plays an important part in the economy. Olives are cultivated in great quantities and they are partly used for the production of premium quality olive oil. Grapes also are being cultivated (partly for wine production), as well as figs and citrus fruits, the vineyards are generally small and medium-sized. Lamezia is famous for its dry red wine, characterized by the local Nerello Mascales grape.

Airports

Fifteen kilometers to the southwest of the city, lies the Lamezia Terme Airport.

Public transport

Public bus transport is being operated by “Lamezia Multiservizi”. There is a regular service to the airport, furthermore there are 18 bus lines that will take you to your desired destination, however, once in a while a bus may break down...

Traffic and parking

Driving around Lamezia Terme outside rush hours, is no problem. However, watch where you park because it is not always clearly indicated whether or not you need to pay, and if so, how.

The car is by far the best means of transport to explore the surrounding areas. The city lies alongside the A3 coastal highway from Salerno to Reggio di Calabria. You can reach Catanzaro, at the Ionian seaside, by taking the SS288.

In case you have some more time to spend, then travel southwards of Lamezia Terme, the coastal road between Pizzo Calabro and Capo Vaticano is breathtaking. Do not pass by Tropea without stopping, the center of this characteristic town has a spectacular sea view.

Hotels

Lamezia Terme has many hotels and guesthouses to offer. However, the finest hotels and resorts are located along the Tyrrhenian seaside, especially down south you will find beautifully situated hotels. If you plan to visit this region during the summer months, we advise you to book your accommodation well in advance.
