Location information for Birmingham

Introduction

Birmingham is also called England's second city, after London, but there is a heavy argument with Manchester about this title. The city was damaged severely during WWII. In the fifties and sixties of the last century many buildings were already restored, but in the nineties the municipality decided to renovate the center. Nowadays, Birmingham is an attractive city, with new squares, such as Centenary Square and Millennium Place, the beautifully restored shopping mall Bull Ring and the canals that have been restored to their former glory and where you will find many restaurants and cafes.

Population

Birmingham has 1 million inhabitants, but the urban area and the surroundings are home to approximately 2.5 million people.

Location

The city lies in the heart of the West Midlands, England´s central region. This also used to be the heart of the Black Country, named after the factories with their smoking chimneys. These have disappeared for the most part. South and West of the city, there are ridges: Lickey Hills and Clent Hills. 315 meters high Walton Hill is the highest point in the vicinity of Birmingham.

Economy

Previously, Birmingham was a center of heavy industry and weapons. It produced steam engines, parts for ships, train carriages, cannons, guns and pistols. These industries have nearly disappeared, but Birmingham still has some industrial production (mainly beer and chocolate - it is the base of the chocolate giant Cadbury’s). Also, two of the world's biggest banks were founded in Birmingham: Lloyds Bank and Midland Bank (nowadays HSBC). The city's three universities don't just supply much employment, but are also the source for many technology companies. Furthermore, Birmingham is an important center of exhibitions and congresses, with an International Convention Centre and the National Exhibition Centre.

Airports

Birmingham Airport is situated thirteen kilometers east of the city center. The airport is easily accessible by rental car: it is on highway A45. From Birmingham first take the highway A6 (or toll road M6), then take exit M42. The way to the airport is clearly indicated on road signs.

Public transport

Birmingham has good public transport facilities. There is no central bus station: most lines depart from different locations in the city center to the suburbs. Furthermore, there are two circle lines (8-Inner Circle and 11-Outer Circle). There is also a tram line from Snow Hill Station to Wolverhampton, via the Jewellery Quarter. There are water buses on Birmingham's canals. Due to their speed they aren't very popular with the locals, but for visitors it is a fun way to explore the city.

Traffic and Parking

Birmingham's center is partly accessible for pedestrians. Streets that allow motorized traffic are often one way. This can make it difficult for you to find your way around. Also, finding a parking space for your rental car can prove to be difficult. At tourist kiosks, you can get a map with all the parking facilities in and around the center.

Hotels

Birmingham has a wide range of accommodations. You will find cheap youth hostels and bed & breakfasts, good mid range hotels and luxury hotels of international chains. Because there are many conventions and exhibitions in Birmingham, we recommend you to book your hotel well in advance.

What most people want to know

The following questions and answers are a selection of the most popular questions. If you do not find the answer to your question, have a look at the Frequently Asked Questions page or contact us.

Is EasyTerra Car Rental the cheapest?

Yes, we offer a guarantee of the lowest price - because we compare various retailers, we can always offer you the best price in town.

What do I need to do when picking up a car?

To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.

Are there any additional costs?

Our rates are all-inclusive. Our reservation department will inform you in advance should additional costs apply. You can always cancel your booking free of charge if you do not agree (this must be done at least 48 hours prior to the start of the car hire period).

What kind of insurance is applicable to my car rental?

In general, Liability Insurance, Fire Insurance, All-Risks Insurance and Theft Insurance are included in the cost of your rental car.

What is a worry-free label?

Only rental companies with a high level of customer satisfaction are eligible to be included in our Worry-Free selection. This rate includes excess cover and unlimited kilometres. Your vehicle will be provided and must be returned with a full tank of fuel. With a vehicle from our Worry-Free selection, you can travel with peace of mind and no hidden costs.

How can I change or cancel my reservation?

You can cancel your reservation through "My Account". We recommend contacting us by phone if your changes to your booking or cancellation takes place at short notice (48 hours or less).

When will I get a confirmation of my booking?

Most reservations will receive confirmation within minutes after payment takes place. We recommend contacting our Booking Department for last minute reservations (pick-up within 48 hours).
