Introduction

New Orleans is the largest city in Louisiana and mainly known for its music, cooking, French influences (the city's French Quarter) and cultural events and festivals like the annual Mardi Gras in February. New Orleans is, however, also an important port on the Gulf of Mexico.

Population

The city itself has almost 350,000 inhabitants, but 1.2 million people live in the entire New Orleans metropolitan area.

Location

New Orleans is located in the south of the United States, on the Mississippi River, about 170 kilometers upstream from where the river's estuary runs into the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf area experiences many hurricanes which sometimes head directly towards the city, like Hurricane Katrina which caused enormous floods in 2006. North of the city lies a large lake, Lake Pontchartrain.

Economy

The city's port forms the backbone of local economy and plays an important part in the oil and gas drillings in the Gulf of Mexico. Oil refineries and other petrochemical industries are related activities. The city is also a center for higher education and many conferences are held here. Tourism is another pillar of the economy: no less than 85,000 people are employed in the tourist sector.

Airports

The city's airport is named after one of the most famous musicians produced by New Orleans: Louis Armstrong International Airport. It's located in the suburb Kenner, 19 kilometers west of the city center. The airport is easily reachable by rental car via the US-61 N (Airline Drive) or the I-10.

Public Transport

New Orleans has an extensive network of buses, but most tourists are mainly attracted by the historical streetcar. There are three lines. Tourists mainly use the Riverfront Line which runs from Esplanade Street near the river, via the French Quarter to the conference center in the so-called Arts District.

Traffic and Parking

It's difficult to find your way around the historical center because there are many one-way streets. Finding a free parking place in the street is also difficult and expensive. Hotels also often charge high rates for parking. During Mardi Gras parking rates skyrocket (up to US$ 10 per hour). Rates are more favorable at Premium Parking in the French Quarter. However, if you want to see more of New Orleans besides the French Quarter, a rental car is an ideal means of transportation.

Hotels

You have a large choice of accommodations in the French Quarter and the Central Business District. These are also the most expensive accommodations in the city. Cheaper options can be found near St. Charles Avenue in Uptown. You'll find many basic hotels and guesthouses in the Marigny and Mid-City districts.
