Fort Myers is the gateway to the southwest of Florida, a great tourist attraction in this American state. The great weather and the surrounding beaches draw millions of visitors annually. Famous Americans also used to have their summer homes here, like Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Both summer homes are tourist attractions.
Population
The city itself has 60,000 inhabitants, but Fort Myers forms part of a metropolitan area (Cape Coral-Fort Myers Metropolitan Area) where ten times more people live.
Location
Fort Myers is located in the southwest of the state of Florida in the United States, on the wide estuary of the Caloosahatchee River. Like the rest of Florida, it has a subtropical climate with short, mild winters and hot, wet summers. Most rainfall falls from June until September.
Economy
Fort Myers is the capital of Lee County and a regional commercial center. Tourism forms the main pillar of local economy. The store chain Chico's (women's fashion) is headquartered here.
Airports
Fort Myers Airport, Southwest Florida International Airport, is situated over 25 kilometers southeast of the city center. It's easily reachable by rental car. From the center you first take the Dr Martin Luther King Blvd and then the I-175. The exit to the airport (exit 131) is clearly signposted.
Public Transport
Fort Myers and surroundings have good public bus transport. As indicated by the name of the bus company, Lee Trans not only takes care of city transport, but also arranges connections with other destinations in Lee County.
Traffic and Parking
Fort Myers isn't very large and you'll have no trouble finding your way around. There are also sufficient facilities to park your car. Bear in mind that a toll is charged on the bridges to Cape Coral and Sanibel Island off the coast. No toll is charged on the way back.
Hotels
Fort Myers is an important holiday destination and therefore has no lack of accommodations. Reviews of the hotels, motels and inns vary widely though; especially some hotels in the city center receive bad reviews. Compare well before booking a room.
