Introduction
Fort Lauderdale in Florida is a popular holiday destination: the city welcomes more than 10 million visitors each year. The beaches near the city draw many people, but there are also dozens of marinas. The city's name refers to the fortresses that were built during the 19th century war with the Seminole Indians. Because of its many canals, the city is also called "the Venice of America", a nickname which is even on the official city seal.

Location
Fort Lauderdale lies on the Atlantic coast in the south of the U.S. state of Florida. Located in a large urban area of 180 km long, running from Miami-Dade in the south until West Palm Beach in the north.
Economy
The local economy is very dependent on tourism. Its visitors are not only sun seekers and water sport enthusiasts; approximately one third of all the people that visit Fort Lauderdale take part in meetings, exhibitions of conferences. Southwest of the center is the large Convention Centre. Home of the largest boat show in the world, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Construction and maintenance of boats is an important part of the economy.
Airports
The airport is located four kilometers south of the city center. Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport is mainly used by budget airlines. The airport is easily accessible via the South Federal Highway, which connects to the Port Everglades Expressway.
The larger Miami airport is located forty kilometers south of Fort Lauderdale. Miami International Airport is accessible via Interstate 95. From Fort Lauderdale you can get to this airport in about forty minutes (except during morning and evening rush hours).
Public Transport
Fort Lauderdale has public transportation in the form of buses. These buses connect to public transport in the neighboring counties of Miami-Dade and Palm Beach. The Sun Trolley is a bus connection between the main points in Fort Lauderdale. You can stop this bus by just waving your hand; there are no stops. On weekdays the Sun Trolley runs mostly in the center, on weekends these buses run between the beaches and two shopping malls (Coral Ridge Mall and Harbor Shops).
Traffic and Parking
The east of Fort Lauderdale – between the center and the beach – consists of a labyrinth of canals. A good map will prove very useful here. For the rest it is easy to explore Fort Lauderdale with its rectangular street pattern by rental car. There are many parking facilities, but in summer it can be difficult to find a free space. A rental car is the most recommended means of transport for exploring the area.
Hotels
In the city center and especially along the East Las Olas Boulevard many hotels have been built in recent years. Also, there are a lot of new restaurants, bars, shops and art galleries. The hotels in this area are middle class or higher. Cheaper accommodation can be found in West Las Olas. To be certain of a suitable accommodation we recommend you to book your accommodation in Fort Lauderdale well in advance, especially in summer.
