Introduction
Malmö is the third largest city in Sweden, after Stockholm and Gothenburg. The old city center is dominated by no less than three squares: Gustav Adolfs torg, Stortorget and Lilla torg. The castle, Malmöhus, dating from the fifteenth century is also worth a visit.
Population
The city has almost 300,000 inhabitants.
Location
Malmö is located in the far south of Sweden on the Öresund, the narrow strait between the Kattegat and the Baltic Sea. On the other site of the strait lies the Danish capital Copenhagen, with which Malmö is connected via the Öresund Bridge.
Economy
Malmö was one of the first industrialized cities in Sweden. Before the construction of the Öresund Bridge local economy went downhill and unemployment in the city was high. Since the opening of the bridge in 2000 economy picked up remarkably in Malmö. Especially biotech and IT companies have settled in the city. A considerable part of the population is also working in Copenhagen. By Swedish standards however Malmö still has a high unemployment rate.
Airports
Malmö Airport is situated 28 kilometers east of the city. The airport is easily reachable by rental car. From the Malmö beltway you take the exit to the E65. The route to the airport is clearly signposted.
Public Transport
Malmö has excellent public transport. From the central bus station near the Gustav Adolf square busses run to all destinations in the city. There are also regional busses to destinations further out, for example the university grounds in Lund. There's also a regular bus connection with Copenhagen.

Hotels
Malmö has a large supply of accommodation. You can stay in a youth hostel, but also in a five star hotel and everything in between. The city isn't a tourist top attraction, but still we recommend booking your hotel room in advance if you want to visit Malmö in summer months.
