Introduction

Ibiza is one of the four Balearic Islands. Ibiza is the most extreme of the islands in terms of its landscape and in terms of the kind of people it attracts. Its reputation concerning its nightlife is true; it is very extreme and very extravagant. The landscape of Ibiza is characterized by the flat area in the north, consisting of a patchwork, orchards and wooded hills. In addition, Ibiza has many rocky coasts and sandy beaches.

Population

Ibiza has about 100,000 inhabitants. Ibiza City, the islands capital, has about 40,000 inhabitants, and San Antonio, its second largest city, has about 16,000 inhabitants. However, the island appears more heavily populated, due to the fact that it annually attracts 4 million tourists.

Location

Ibiza is one of the four Balearic Islands, which are located to the east of the east coast of Spain, bordering on the Gulf of Valencia and the Mediterranean. Ibiza is the closest to the mainland, at about 100 kilometers.

Economy

The agricultural sector is one of the pillars of the island's economy. Primarily in the north, where fruit is cultivated; there are many orchards. Also, many animals are kept on the island. Agriculture provides jobs for farmers as well people who are active in trade.

The main source of income on Ibiza is tourism. Especially during the summer, the island attracts many tourists. Annually, over four million people come to the island. The island attracts an interesting mixture of tourists: hippies, fashion lovers, nudists, party people and mass tourists. The tourists are attracted by Ibiza's beautiful beaches, its hip discotheques, magnificent landscape, rocky coasts, etc.

Airports

Ibiza has one airport, Ibiza Airport (or Aeroport d'Eivissa), which is located about 7 kilometers from Ibiza City, which is situated on the south side of Ibiza's east coast. Ibiza Airport processes flights to and from, among other places, Barcelona, Valencia, and other major European cities.

Public transport

Most people who come to Ibiza arrive by plane. It is also possible to go to the island by boat. There are ferries from, among other places, Alicante and Barcelona. There are also ferry services between the islands. The companies that offer these services are Transediterrane and Flebasa.

The best way to discover the island is by rental car. This is also true for the other Balearic Islands: Formentera, Mallorca and Minorca. For Formentera, bicycles are an excellent solution, considering its size. If you do not have a rental car, you can use the buses on the island, which will take you from Ibiza Airport (or Aeroport d' Eivissa) to Ibiza City, as well as from Ibiza City to San Antonio or Portinatx.

Traffic and Parking

As we mentioned earlier, rental cars are excellent for exploring Ibiza. The roads on Ibiza vary from bad to very good. The (very) good roads are closest to the routes that lead to tourist attractions. The worst roads are on routes that to not lead to tourist attractions. So renting a good car is hardly a luxury on this beautiful island. Parking on Ibiza is only a problem at top tourist attractions, in the sense that you may not be able to park as closely as you may want.

Hotels

On Ibiza there are many hotels, varying from very expensive and luxurious to cheap. The expensive hotels are located at the most beautiful sites, closest to the tourist attractions. The cheaper hotels are further away. During the peak season, i.e. the summer, we certainly recommend booking in advance, especially if you want to go to a certain place or resort.
