Introduction
Granada is a tourist attraction of considerable size, mainly because the many relics from the era of the Moorish empire with the Alhambra being absolutely highlighted. Furthermore, it is a college town with corresponding lively nightlife. The surrounding areas also invite you to visit Granada, in summer you can hike in the Sierra Nevada, which is an attractive ski area in winter.
Population
The city has approximately 240,000 inhabitants, including the suburban areas almost half a million people live in and around Granada.
Location
Granada is located in the south of Spain at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and at the confluence of three rivers: Beiro, Darro and Genil. The city is situated on an altitude of 783 meters above sea level. The summers can be very hot, therefore it is best to visit the historic monuments of Granada in spring and fall.
Economy
Besides tourism, agriculture is of great importance for the region. Mainly grains are cultivated, but there are also sugarcane and tobacco plantations. Other agricultural products are olives, oranges, lemons, pomegranates, figs and almonds. Furthermore, there is also some textile and paper industry, soap and liquor are produced.
Airports
The international Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport is normally referred to as Granada Airport. The airport is located 17 kilometers to the west of the city, along the A-92 highway (Granada–Seville).
Public transport
Most places of interest, such as the Alhambra and the Arabic Albayzin district, can best be explored on foot. To get to other destinations there is an excellent public transport network consisting of subways and buses.
The subway trains run from 5.00 a.m. to midnight, on Friday until 2.00 a.m. and 24 hours on Saturdays. It is the most efficient way of traveling, however in transit you do not see much. Though much slower, you can take the bus in order to combine sightseeing and traveling at the same time.
Traffic and parking
Like in most big cities it is not recommendable to go downtown by car, parts of the city are exclusively for pedestrians. It is best to park your car on the outskirts of the city and continue by public transport. There are also many parking garages and parking lots in the city center.
The car is by far the best means of transport to explore the surrounding areas of Granada, the beautiful Andalusian scenery and the picturesque towns and villages.
Hotels
There is certainly no lack of hotels in Granada. There are luxurious hotels, but there is also a wide offer of medium priced and budget hotels. You can also rent one of the many apartments. The price of the accommodations in Granada is generally somewhat lower than the rest of Spain.
