Rygge is a town in the Norwegian Østfold County. It's mainly the operating base for visits to fortified towns in this county, like Sarpsborg, Fredriksstad and Halden. Near Sarpsborg you can also visit rock-drawings from the Stone Age and gravestones from the Viking Age. There are also two beautiful lakes nearby Rygge.
The town has approximately 14,000 inhabitants.
Rygge is located in the southeast of Norway, about 60 kilometers south of the capital Oslo. In the west Østfold County borders with the Oslofjord and in the east with Sweden.
From the old days, Rygge is an agrarian community, but tourism also provides income. Visitors are not only attracted by the beautiful fortified towns in Østfold County, but also by the coast along the Oslofjord, and in particular the idyllic town of Larkollen. The Royal Norwegian Air Force also has a base near Rygge.
Moss Airport-Rygge is mainly used by budget airlines. It lies directly next to the town, on the other side of the freeway E6. From the center the Flyplassveien runs to the airport. From the airport, you can easily reach other destinations in Østfold or the capital Oslo (almost 70 car kilometers) by rental car, thanks to the freeway E6.
Østfold County has excellent public bus transport with connections to all important cities: Moss, Larkollen, Sarpsborg, Fredriksstad and Halden, but also to the capital Oslo.
Rygge is a small town and Østfold County is relatively quiet. You'll have no problem finding your way around in a rental car. The freeway E6, between the airport and Oslo, can be fairly busy though. If you use Moss Airport-Rygge to travel to Oslo, bear in mind that street parking in the Norwegian capital is fairly expensive. You can park your rental car for free in the municipal parking garages if you have the Oslo Pass.
There are barely any hotels in Rygge, but there are accommodations nearby, for example, in Moss and on the nearby recreation island of Jeløya. The former-mentioned fortified towns also have a reasonable choice of guesthouses and hotels. Finally there are several campsites, scattered around Østfold County.
