Introduction
The Norwegian town Alta is mainly known for the rock-drawings that have been found. The oldest date back more than six thousand years, the youngest date from the beginning of our Era. The rock-drawings are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Population
Alta has almost 20,000 inhabitants.
Location
Alta is located at the far north of Norway, in Finnmark county. The river Altealva flows through a deep ravine and discharges into the Altafjord near Alta. Alta is the northernmost city in the world surpassing 10,000 inhabitants.
Economy
The slate industry is one of the pillars of local economy. Trade with Russia has also bloomed again, after the fall of the Soviet Union. Other than that, education and public services create employment.
Airports
The city airport is located three kilometers east of the center. It is easily reachable by rental car: the airport of Alta is located right off freeway E6. The route to the airport is clearly signposted.
Public Transport
Alta has a good public bus system, but the schedule is extremely limited late at night and during weekends.
Traffic and Parking
To park in the street in Alta you need to pay during the day on workdays and on Saturday mornings. Outside these hours you can park for free. There are also some parking garages where you can park your rental car.
Hotels
Following the opening of a brand new hotel in the city center in 2010, the number of available hotel rooms has reached an acceptable level. One of the city attractions is the ice hotel, with everything made out of ice, including the glasses at the bar. We recommend you book your accommodation in Alta well in advance.
