Location information for Vilnius

Car rental Vilnius
Introduction
Vilnius is the attractive capital of Lithuania. Vilnius' main attraction is the large, historic center with many old churches and picturesque alleys. The entire downtown area is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Population
The city has almost 600,000 inhabitants.
Location
Vilnius is located southeast of Lithuania, at the confluence of the Vilnia and the Neris Rivers.
The city lies more than three hundred kilometers from the Baltic Sea.
Economy
Vilnius is the economic center of Lithuania, where trade of products produced in the country plays an important role (for example textiles, wood and foods). Vilnius is also an important center of financial and commercial services. This is well shown by the new business center of the city on the north bank of the Neris. Vilnius also has one of the oldest universities in this part of Europe.
Airports
The airport of Vilnius is situated six kilometers south of the city center. The airport is easily reachable by rental car. From the city you follow the Svitrigailos gatve, which crosses the railroad and runs straight to the airport via the southern districts. The route to the airport is clearly signposted.
Public Transport
Vilnius has a good public transportation system, consisting of busses and trolley busses. There are also private minivans that most of the time don't follow a specific route, but go where passengers want to go.
Traffic and Parking
It's not difficult to find your way around in a rental car in Vilnius, but it's better to avoid driving during morning and evening rush hour. The roads in the city are then extremely busy and there are many traffic jams. Also bear in mind that the streets in the old center are extremely narrow and often one-way streets. You need to pay for street parking in the center. Only parking on Sundays is free. Signposting also leaves to be desired. The word 'Centras' on the road signs doesn't refer to the historic center but to the new business center.
Hotels
Vilnius has a good supply of accommodation. In the old center you find attractive, but often expensive hotels in historic buildings. North of the River Neris you find a concentration of business hotels and cheap motels can be found mainly in the southern districts. Vilnius draws many business travelers and tourists. It's therefore recommended to book your hotel room well in advance.
