Shannon Airport in a nutshell

Shannon Airport in the south-west of Ireland, was created in a time when airplanes were unable to cover long distance with refueling. The airport became the 'gas station' for transatlantic flights. From the moment refueling was no longer necessary, the government of Ireland protected the airport by making an arrangement with American airline companies. The rules were relaxed and in the future the airport will probably be a combination of an airport for budget airline Ryanair and a military airport.

The airport, located at 24 kilometres from Limerick, has one restaurant and three shops, and it can only be reached by car or bus. In the immediate vicinity there are a number of hotels.
