Car rental Zakynthos
Introduction
Zakynthos City is the capital of the Greek island Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea. The city has a beautiful old center with the church Agios Dionysos which is worth seeing and interesting museums, such as the Byzantine museum and the Solomos museum. The Venetian Kastro is located high above the city.
Population
The island has over 40,000 inhabitants, of which almost half lives in Zakynthos City.
Location
Zakynthos City is located on the flat east coast of the island. On the east and south coasts of Zakynthos you find beaches; the north and west coasts consist of craggy rocks that at some places rise sheer from the sea. Because of the abundant rainfall, especially during winter months, Zakynthos is a green island with rich vegetation.
Economy
Although tourism forms an important source of income for Zakynthos, agriculture still plays a prominent role in local economy. The island produces raisins, olives, grapes and citrus fruit. Part of the grape harvest is processed into wine. There are also several fishing ports along the coast.
Airports
Zakynthos' airport is situated four kilometers south of the capital, between the tourist resorts Laganas and Kalamaki. Zakynthos Dyonisios Solomos Airport is easily reachable by rental car. From Zakynthos City you follow the highway to Keriou. The exit to the airport is clearly signposted.
Public Transport
Busses run between the biggest cities on the island, but run infrequently. The local population therefore usually chooses taxis.
Traffic and Parking
A rental car is the best means of transportation if you want to explore Zakynthos. Bear in mind though that roads other than main roads are often unpaved. On asphalted roads you need to be aware of holes in the road. You also often run into shepherds with their flock. Signposting remains to be desired, a good roadmap is indispensable. In general it's no problem finding a parking space. In the center of Zakynthos City there are some guarded parking lots.
Hotels
Zakynthos City has a good supply of hotels, but you find most tourist hotels and holiday resorts in the popular seaside resorts, like Laganas, Kalamaki, Argassi and Agios Sostis. In summer months it's quite busy on Zakynthos, while in winter months many hotels close. We therefore recommend booking your accommodation on Zakynthos in advance.
